Diamonds The Four C's

Clarity

The clarity grade refers to the degree to which a diamond is free of inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds are formed deep beneath the earth and because of heat and pressure they contain unique birth marks either as external or internal inclusions. Using the GIA international grading system diamonds are graded from no inclusions Flawless(FL) to diamonds with visible inclusions (I3)

Color

Diamonds are valued by how closely they are colorless. The less the color the more the value. The exception to this are fancy color diamonds like pinks, blues, and yellows. The color scale shown below indicates the color grade. Starting with D, representing colorless, to the letter Z representing an increase presence of color.

Cut

Cut is the only human contribution to the diamond’s beauty, and its the most important. In the industry, it is used to describe the shape, proportions and finish of a diamond. Diamonds can be cut into almost any shape.

GIA’s diamond cut grade is really about how well a diamond’s facets interact with light. Precise artistry and workmanship are required to fashion a stone so its proportions, symmetry, and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond.

Carat

Diamonds are weighed on a scale of metric carats. Abbreviated as “ct.” A carat is divided into 100 points. Therefore and 70 point diamond weighes 0.70 carats. The majority of diamonds used in fine jewelry weighs less then a carat. The larger the diamond the more rare it is. Since diamonds are priced per carat the larger the carat weight the price increases as well. Therefore, a 2ct diamond will be worth twice the amount of a 1ct diamond.
