How Long Does a Custom Engagement Ring Take?

Four to six weeks from your first consultation to a finished ring in your hand. That is the honest working figure for most designs we build in Yorkville, and it holds for the majority of what walks through the door.

The reason people ask is almost always the same. There is a date. A trip, an anniversary, a family gathering where everyone will be in one place for the first time in years. So the useful answer is not just the number. It is where the time goes and which parts you can compress.

Week one: consultation and direction

The first meeting takes about an hour. We talk about your partner’s hands, what they already wear, what they have pointed at, what they have said they dislike. That last one matters more than people expect.

If you have photos, bring them. Screenshots from Pinterest are genuinely useful, and there is no need to be embarrassed about arriving with fourteen of them. Half the job at this stage is working out what the fourteen have in common.

You do not need to know the design. You need to know roughly the budget and roughly the deadline. Everything else can be discovered.

Week one to two: sketch and CAD

Hand sketch beside the finished custom engagement ring

Our designers work up a concept, either as a hand sketch or a 3D CAD render depending on the design. You see it before anything is made, and you change it.

This is the stage where revisions are free and easy, so use it. Moving a prong, adjusting a band width, changing the height of the gallery is a few minutes of work on screen and a week of work once metal has been cut. Most clients go through one or two rounds. Some go through five, and that is fine, though each round adds days.

Week two: stone selection

We pull stones in your range and you look at them together, under the same light, next to each other. This is the part that cannot be replicated online, and it is the part clients tell us afterwards changed their mind.

Two diamonds with identical paper specs can look different. Cut quality varies within a grade, and the difference is visible when you have both in front of you.

If you want a specific shape, colour, or a stone above a certain size, sourcing can add a week. Fancy shapes in larger sizes are the usual cause. Our 4 Cs guide is worth reading before this appointment so you know what you are looking at, and our pages on natural and lab grown stones cover the choice between them.

Weeks two to five: the bench

Bench jeweller hand setting diamonds into a ring

Casting, then the actual handwork. Setting stones, filing, finishing, polishing. This is where the four to six weeks mostly lives, and it is not padding.

Hand-set pavé takes days on its own. Every stone is seated individually, and a bench jeweller who rushes it produces a ring that loses stones in two years. Micro pavé, intricate galleries, and any hand engraving push toward the longer end.

Platinum takes longer than gold. It is harder to work, holds heat differently, and demands more finishing time. If your deadline is tight and you are undecided on metal, that is worth knowing.

Week five to six: inspection and delivery

Final quality check, then a professional clean and the insurance appraisal. We look at every prong under magnification before it leaves.

Then you collect it, or we ship it. Shipping across Canada is free on orders over $200, and pickup at the Yorkville showroom can be arranged discreetly if the surprise is still intact.

What makes it take longer

Design indecision is the biggest one by a distance. Not the number of revisions, but the gaps between them. A client who takes eleven days to respond to a render has added eleven days.

Sourcing an unusual stone is second. A specific fancy colour, an emerald cut above three carats, a particular fluorescence. These are findable, but they take time to find.

Heirloom resets add a step. If we are pulling a diamond from an existing piece, it has to be removed, examined, and sometimes recut, and we will not commit to a timeline until we have seen the stone. Old settings occasionally hide chips that only appear once the stone is out.

Metal choice, as above. And the calendar itself: November and December are our busiest weeks, and so are the four weeks before Valentine’s Day.

If your deadline is tight

Come in with a rough budget rather than a precise one. Say yes to a stone that is very good rather than holding out for one that is theoretically perfect. Choose an existing setting and modify it instead of starting from a blank page, which can cut a fortnight.

And if the date genuinely cannot move, tell us at the first meeting rather than the third. We will tell you honestly whether it is achievable, and if it is not, we would rather say so early than deliver something rushed.

Ready to start? Take a look at how our custom design process works, or read our walkthrough on designing a customised engagement ring. Booking eight weeks before your date leaves comfortable room.

Frequently asked questions

  1. How long does a custom engagement ring take?
Four to six weeks in most cases, from first consultation to finished ring. Intricate settings, platinum, and hard-to-source stones push toward the longer end.
  2. Can a custom engagement ring be made faster than four weeks?
Sometimes, if you modify an existing setting rather than designing from scratch and accept a stone from current stock. Tell us the deadline at the first meeting so we can tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
  3. How many design revisions are included?
As many as you need at the sketch and CAD stage, because changes on screen cost nothing. Once casting has begun, changes mean starting over, so we make sure you are happy before anything is made.
  4. Can I use a diamond from an existing ring?
Yes, and heirloom resets are a large part of what we do. The stone needs to be removed and examined first, since old settings sometimes conceal chips or abrasions, so we confirm the timeline after seeing it.
  5. When should I start if I want to propose at Christmas?
Book by early October. November and December are our busiest period, and starting eight weeks out leaves room for revisions and stone sourcing without pressure.
  6. Do I need to know what I want before the first consultation?
No. Bring photos of rings your partner has reacted to, an idea of budget, and your deadline. Working out the design is the job of the first meeting.
